Review by K.M. Weiland

Variants, the collaborative album by Brian Grainger and David Tagg, is a mesmerizing and immersive sonic journey that transports the listener to a dreamlike realm of ambient textures, ethereal melodies, and subtle rhythms. The album consists of six tracks that blend seamlessly into each other, creating a cohesive and seamless experience that flows like a river of sound.

From the opening track, "The Black and White Variations," the listener is enveloped by a dense and intricate soundworld that evokes the vastness of space and the beauty of nature. Layers of shimmering synths, delicate piano motifs, and pulsing basslines intertwine in a hypnotic dance that unfolds slowly and gracefully.

As the album progresses, the mood shifts and evolves, with each track exploring different sonic landscapes and emotional states. "The Hidden Variations" is a haunting and introspective piece that conjures images of misty forests and abandoned ruins, while "The Blue Variations" is an uplifting and euphoric track that radiates joy and optimism.

Throughout the album, Grainger and Tagg demonstrate their mastery of sound design and composition, crafting intricate and detailed sonic tapestries that reward repeated listens. The production is top-notch, with each sound and instrument given ample space to breathe and shine.
