Review by Kelly Coyle

Five, the latest album by Ashley Hutchings, is a musical journey that transcends time and genres. Hutchings, a legendary figure in British folk music, has assembled a stellar cast of musicians to create an album that showcases his talents as a composer, arranger, and bass player.

The album features an eclectic mix of traditional folk tunes, original compositions, and covers of classic songs. Each track is arranged with meticulous attention to detail, with lush instrumentation and tight harmonies that transport the listener to another world.

From the hauntingly beautiful "The Sun Never Shines on the Poor" to the foot-stomping "The Cuckoo's Nest," Five is a masterclass in folk music. Hutchings' bass playing is a standout feature throughout the album, providing a solid foundation for the intricate melodies and harmonies.

The album also features guest appearances from some of the finest musicians in the British folk scene, including Martin Carthy, John Kirkpatrick, and Blair Dunlop. These collaborations add depth and variety to the album, showcasing Hutchings' ability to work with other artists to create something truly special.

  • This is substantially a re-release of the 2002 collection of the same name (TECD037) but it has been updated to include content by Ashley's latest (at the time) band The Rainbow Chasers. Two songs from The Albion Band, the 1981 track 'Galliard / Brawl' and the 2001 track 'Press Gang', were removed to make way for two Rainbow Chasers tracks - otherwise the included tracks are the same.

About Ashley Hutchings

British folk rock bassist, vocalist, songwriter, arranger, bandleader and producer. Born : January 26, 1945 in Southgate, Middlesex, England. Hutchings was a founding member (1967) of Fairport Convention with which he remained until the release of their fourth album "Liege and Lief" in 1969. After he left Fairport he helped found (1969) Steeleye Span, another folk rock group (albeit without a drum), which he too left early on, after their third album was released. He formed and left and returned again to The Albion Country Band. He has spent the past forty-five plus years contributing to various and sundry other traditional English folk efforts, including but not limited to Morris dancing, English country dance, Child ballads, skiffle and, of course, Fairport's Cropredy Convention.
