Review by Stephen Robinson

Religiøse Folketoner is a beautiful album by the Norwegian singer Aase Nordmo Løvberg. Released in 1954, it features traditional religious folk songs from different parts of Norway. Løvberg's clear and powerful voice is perfectly suited for these songs, which range from solemn hymns to joyful dances.

The album opens with "Eg veit i himmerik ei borg" (I know a castle in heaven), a hymn that showcases Løvberg's ability to convey both the reverence and the joy of the lyrics. Other highlights include "O bli hos meg" (Abide with me), a beloved hymn that Løvberg sings with great tenderness, and "Den signede dag" (The blessed day), a lively dance that celebrates the resurrection of Christ.

The arrangements on Religiøse Folketoner are simple and elegant, allowing Løvberg's voice to shine. The instrumentation is mostly acoustic, with guitar, fiddle, and accordion providing a delicate accompaniment to the singer. The album has a timeless quality that makes it a joy to listen to even today.
