Review by Kimberly Jennings

Best Beat In Town by Switch is a groovy and upbeat album that is perfect for anyone who loves to dance. The album is filled with catchy melodies, funky basslines, and lively percussion that will have listeners moving their feet in no time.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "There'll Never Be," which features a smooth and soulful vocal performance from lead singer Phillip Ingram. The song's funky rhythm and infectious chorus make it a surefire hit.

Another highlight is "You Pulled a Switch," which has a more laid-back vibe but still manages to be incredibly catchy. The song's use of horns and strings adds a touch of sophistication to the otherwise simple arrangement.

Soul, funk and disco sextet, formed in Mansfield, Ohio in 1974 with 3 members from Grand Rapids (Michigan) and 3 other members from Akron (Ohio). At the time, they called themselves First Class. They then joined Barry Whites as backing band musicians and were let go shortly thereafter. Eventually changing their name to Switch due to their ability to switch to different instruments during a song, the group got the attention of Jermaine Jackson who heard the groups demo tape and within days the group was promptly signed to the Motown Records subsidiary label, Gordy. There, they recorded and released their self titled debut album in 1978. The album featured their first Top 10 R&B hit single entitled Therell Never Be. Depending on whom was singing lead on the songs, their songs were written by Williams, Ingram and the late Bobby DeBarge and often in collaboration with Jermaine Jackson, who continued to sponsor the band throughout their five years on the label. Though they never did manage to cross over into the pop singles chart, they were a consistent presence on the R&B charts through the late 1970s. Other than Therell Never Be, songs such as I Call Your Name (1979), Best Beat In Town (1979) and "Love Over And Over Again" (1980) also became hits for the group. Shortly after, the DeBarge brothers left to mentor the group with their siblings, and lead singer Phillip Ingram left to pursue a solo career, so 3 new musicians were added to Switch for vocals, percussion and keyboards. This configuration of Switch signed with Total Experience and recorded a final album in 1984. The group broke up later on that year. Since 2010 Switch has reunited featuring 3 original members, 1 original sessions/on stage guitarist, and 3 new members.

Comments

SWITCH did a song called 'DO IT'. I coulda sworn it was on the same album as THERE'LL NEVER BE, but I can't find it. Anybody remember it? Know where I can find it?
This would have been a great group with this and other songs should have been on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack? is it just me?
Loved Switch!!!
WHOS SINGING LEAD ON THIS?
Back in the day Switch was one of my favorite groups. I remember this song. Thanks for posting.
Jermaine Jackson founded this group. This is super heavy funk.
Te recomiendo otro buen tema de esos años. The Sylvers "Don´t Stop Get Off
Y sabes que ese tema lo vine a encontrar de suerte en una recopilación vinilo recién el año 1984. Tampoco sabía quienes eran pero el título me dió la pauta. Otros temas de esos años eran: Reach for it (George Duke), L-O-V-E-U (Brass Construction), Funk´n Roll (Quazar) etc. Saludos
Remember when I was a Child on 1978...The party still goes on 2009. Thanks man for the FUNK and nothing but The FUNK. Greetings from Chile.
