Review by Artyom Gnidenko

The album "Cello Sonatas" featuring works by Shostakovitch, Rachmaninov, and performed by Gwyneth George and Alberto Portugheis, is a remarkable collection of classical music. The album showcases the talent and expertise of the two musicians, who deliver an exceptional performance that is both powerful and emotionally charged.

The cello sonatas of Shostakovitch and Rachmaninov are two of the most celebrated works in the classical repertoire, and George and Portugheis do them justice with their interpretation. Their rendition of Shostakovitch's Sonata for Cello and Piano in D Minor, Op. 40, is particularly impressive, with George's cello playing both haunting and intense, and Portugheis's piano accompaniment providing a rich and nuanced backdrop.

Similarly, their take on Rachmaninov's Sonata for Cello and Piano in G Minor, Op. 19, is equally impressive. George's cello work is masterful, delivering both the emotional depth and technical precision needed for this piece. Portugheis's piano work complements George's playing beautifully, creating a rich and complex soundscape that is both captivating and moving.
