Renaissance - Azure Dor

Review by Billy Cobb

The album Azure Dor by Renaissance is a masterpiece of progressive rock music. The band's unique blend of classical and rock influences is evident throughout the album, and their virtuosic musicianship is on full display.

The opening track, "Jekyll and Hyde," sets the tone for the album with its intricate melodies and soaring vocals. The title track, "Azure Dor," is a standout, featuring a stunning vocal performance by Annie Haslam and a powerful instrumental section.

Throughout the album, the band explores a range of musical styles and moods, from the hauntingly beautiful "The Winter Tree" to the epic "The Flood at Lyons." The album's closer, "The Sweetest Kiss," is a perfect ending, with its lush orchestration and poignant lyrics.

Renaissance was originally formed in London, UK, in 1969 by ex- vocalist and drummer who wanted to explore a new sound blending elements of rock, folk and classical music. Relf assumed the role of guitarist, and they were joined by bassist , keyboardist , and vocalist . This lineup recorded the first self-titled album and most of the second album, Illusion (1971). A rapid series of personnel changes followed. Guitarist and composer first appeared on Illusion. Before his departure from the band Hawken recruited new vocalist . By 1972, when the Renaissance recorded their third album, , none of the original members remained though McCarty still wrote music for the band. By 1973 the lineup had stabilized with Haslam, Dunford, keyboardist , bassist and vocalist , and drummer . This lineup produced a string of relatively successful albums over the remainder of the decade. They had one Top 10 single in the U.K., "

Comments

Thanks for uploading this song. Last Time i heard it, was in 1988. Azure D'Or Is one of their best produced record.
This album, indeed the last by the most popular lineup of Renaissance, tends to be underappreciated by most fans. In my opinion, it's full of strong songs. One reason some people don't like it is that it doesn't contain any long 10-minute epics like previous works. But some of these "epics", such as "Touching Once" or "The Sisters", seemed to be long just for the sake of being long. I liked the introduction of shorter songs. But the songwriting is still rooted in the band's usual influences -- folk and folk-rock ("Friends", "Forever Changing", "Kalynda") or the classical/symphonic ("The Flood at Lyons", the rather baroque "Only Angels Have Wings"). Or, combining the two ("Golden Key", "Jekyll and Hyde"). And the marvelous instrumental "The Discovery" proves that Renaissance could still hold its own with progressive rock peers like Yes.The melodies are catchy, the lyrics are always interesting, and Annie Haslam's amazing five octave range floats above it all. What a lot of fans had problems with was David Hentschel's production. He had produced the band's previous album, "A Song for All Seasons", which gave the band a huge hit single with "Northern Lights". Hentschel, who also produced Genesis at that time, had enough pull to persuade the band to adopt an approach on which guitars, vocal harmonies and especially synthesizers were endlessly overdubbed. This made them sound quite a bit like Genesis. The "everything-but-the-kitchen-sink" style does make the album sound rather stiff and sterile. The songs don't seem to have much breathing room. Hentschel was able to balance better the use of electric guitars and synthetic orchestration with the band's usual acoustic approach on "Seasons".Once you get past that, though, you get to some really good songs. For those who find ten minute prog-rock epics a bit overwhelming or boring, "Azure d'Or" might be a good introduction to the marvelous sounds of Renaissance. For more seasoned fans, repeated listening will uncover the wonderful lyrics and melodies of these songs.
Obrigado Goytabr pela crítica e elogio.
Concordo plenamente com você em
relação ao audio. Vou tentar melhorar.
This album commercially bombed. The "Fans" didn't like the electronics. Huh? What year are we in? This is their best album they ever did are you fuggin kidding me! The whole catalog is great make no mistake the whole Renaissance phenom is awesome. But lets be honest folks Pre Azure Renaissance is the very Prog Rock that created the Sex Pistols! Novella, Ashes Are Burning, Mother Russia, great stuff love it but at some point we need to depart from the 1970's and move forward. Thank God for YouTube!! We can move forward and backward like Time bandits. Annie has a voice like no other. Bjork comes to mind. Singers who take it to a whole new level with the vocals.
Una canción más para añadir a la extensa colección de buenas canciones de Renaissance! ??♥️
Densely overproduced! I miss the strings of earlier Renaissance LPs, which here seem to have been replaced by late 70s synth sounds. Produced by David Hentschel of Genesis fame, IIRC, and a bit blousy and veiled and mushy, much like the late 70s Genesis albums pre-remastering. But... nice to hear this again anyway.
Yes, I am a Prog head. I purchased this one, at the suggestion of a woman record store, clerk, in 1979. I had never heard of Renaissance then. As the decades continued, I have realized the importance of this album. Of course, we all like the classic period, but in this track, and album, Betty Thatcher really shines, plus the sheer difficult time changes, keys, and such tight musicianship, ought to make this a favorite of Renaissance lovers. PS. I may be the only person on the West coast, who likes Renaissance.
Great song...love the keyboards.
Superb! Phenomenal, spectacular musicianship! Wonderful!
i like it. This is like prog Abba. I like her voice.
Nice song.
One of the greatest works this side of classical music. Their Magnum Opus. This album like the band are criminally overlooked.
Yep, I just read it today!
The best work Renaissance did, to me. All single piece of this song is amazing to me. All of it. Actually, I only read the romance "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, by Robert Louis Stevenson
