Comments

It always spreads so smoothly, there never is a lump
It's polyunsaturated and doesn't swell my humps
The children always love it, and that's the crucial test
I'm always buying Flora, the margarine that's best.
I LEARNED TO SING THIS SONG WHEN I WAS ATTENDING THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA DURING THE 1960s. I love story-telling songs.
This was the "B" side of a Peter, Paul and Mary 45rpm release in the mid 60's. Anyone remember what the "A" side was?
"Way down in yonder shady grove..."
Best version of this song hands down
Thnx for sharing !!
Saw them in person in concert many years ago in San Diego. They were a great talented group, extremely popular in their day which sadly is no more.
When first I came to Louisville, my fortune there to find,
I met a fair young maiden there, her beauty filled my mind.
Her rosy cheek, her ruby lips, they gave my heart no rest.
The name she bore was Flora, the lily of the west.

I courted lovely Flora, she promised ne'er to go.
But soon a tale was told to me that filled my heart with woe.
They said she meets another man who holds my love in jest.
And yet I trusted Flora, the lily of the west.

'Way down in yonder shady grove, a man of low degree,
He spoke unto my Flora there and kissed her 'neath a tree.
The answers that she gave to him like arrows pierced my breast.
I was betrayed by Flora, the lily of the west.

I stepped up to my rival, my dagger in my hand.
I seized him by the collar and I ordered him to stand.
All in my desperation I stabbed him in his breast.
I'd killed a man for Flora, the lily of the west.

And then I had to stand my trial, I had to make my plea.
They placed me in a pris'ner's dock and then commenced on me.
Although she swore my life away, deprived me of my rest.
Still I love my faithless Flora, the lily of the west.
My name is Floarea, the way people pronounce it is flora, its weird hearing my name in a song
My dad absolutely loved this song and it would always make him teary as it was his oldest brother's favorite song who had passed long before I was born. My dad taught me how to harmonize while singing along with Peter, Paul, and Mary. He was either Peter or Paul and I was Mary, always harmonizing with him. It wasn't until There Is A Ship I learned that my dad could harmonize with me. I miss my dad so much, I lost him in July, and this was the first time I could bring myself to listen to Peter, Paul, and Mary and just like my dad did while missing his brother, I cried while listening to this song as I miss him
I kinda ended up owning this album by way of my way-older sister's leaving the home for college. I've aged nearly 5 decades since then. I still think that little dude had good taste, so this track is also in my personal YouTube Playlist.
The answers that she gave to him like arrows pierced my breast....
I wish PP&M would have recorded Dylan's ballad: Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts.
