Pere Ubu - Pennsylvania

Review by Ibelisse Sánchez

Pennsylvania, the latest album by Pere Ubu, is a unique and powerful addition to the band's discography. Known for their experimental and avant-garde approach to rock music, Pere Ubu delivers a set of songs that are both challenging and rewarding.

The album opens with "Monkey Bizness," a frenzied and disorienting track that sets the tone for what's to come. The band's signature mix of angular guitar riffs, off-kilter rhythms, and David Thomas' idiosyncratic vocals are all present and accounted for. "Strychnine Dandelion" is another standout track, with its ominous bassline and haunting melody.

One of the album's most striking features is its use of electronic textures and samples. "Flicking Cigarettes at the Sun" features a glitchy, stuttering beat that sounds like it's being transmitted from a distant planet. "The Road Ahead" incorporates eerie synth pads and a robotic vocal effect, creating a sense of otherworldly unease.

Throughout the album, Pere Ubu proves that they are still pushing boundaries and exploring new sonic territory. "Wasted" is a moody, atmospheric ballad that showcases Thomas' emotive singing, while "Howl" is a propulsive rocker that builds to a cathartic climax.

Evolving from Cleveland's Teutonic protopunks, , Pere Ubu was formed late in 1975 by Thomas (aka Crocus Behemoth) and guitarist Peter Laughner (who died in 1977). Ubu's classic early singles, "Heart Of Darkness" and "Final Solution," oozed restless angst way before it became the domain of spoiled mallrats. By 1978's aggressive The Modern Dance and the wilder Dub Housing, Pere Ubu's subversions of rock were guided by superior musicianship and fallout from Thomas's Jehovah's Witness upbringing. Personality quirks split the band, and Thomas regrouped for three more self-indulgent albums through 1982, including the abstract stare-down of The Art Of Walking, all with some difficult sonic perversion to recommend them. After several Ubus found themselves onstage in Thomas's Wooden Birds, the band was revived for 1988's The Tenement Year. With newfound focus, Pere Ubu unleashed the ravishing funhouse pop experiment of 1989's Cloudland, which treated mainstream textures like found sounds. The sparkling pop, dented by Thomas's unique warble, continued with the gently peculiar Worlds In Collision. But Ubu tired of the total pop concept and returned to quirkier pursuits for Story Of My Life. Tim Kerr Records picked up the ball with 1995's full-bodied Ray Gun Suitcase--a mix of Ubu's vicious rock, luscious pop and art-damaged identities--and a series of multimedia-enhanced EPs, for which Thomas programmed the codes.

Summary by Ibelisse Sánchez

Pennsylvania is a challenging and rewarding listen that will appeal to fans of Pere Ubu's unique brand of experimental rock. With its mix of abrasive noise, electronic textures, and catchy melodies, it's a testament to the band's continued relevance and creativity.

Comments

This album opens with a metallic sound that is not misleading, but more true in tone than "metal sound". "Woolie Boolie" is impressive in the way it has random piano parts playing over the main song, maybe a return to Ubu of old? Well, in a way, because the mood is right. Little pieces that are not really songs propel the album along (count three: "Mr. Wheeler", "High Water Ville", "Perfume") and many pieces get by on the tribal modes of old. "Silent Spring" is a journey in repetition that never gets old, "Sad Txt" and "Drive" are songs where Thomas mumbles over some dark atmosphere, and it actually works! This album marks the first time in a loooong time that Pere Ubu have made a solid record, and the record is actually relatively calm for an Ubu record. After "Muddy Waters", you can pretty much turn the album off though, because the rest of it sucks. "Wheelhouse" is the only one of the last four tracks that is decent, and that song is book-ended by either two bonus tracks that are unnamed, or two songs that are meant to be a part of the album, hence another double album? I don't actually know, but the songs really aren't that good anyways. Though trimming would have made a world of difference, the first two thirds of the album represent a rebirth of the band in song quality, and an album worth getting finally! If the band can keep up the quality of Pennsylvania, we are in for some good rock music in the near future. Something to cheer about.
Mr. Thomas and Mr . Buzz ( Melvins ) need to collaborate on sth . The thought of the two in the studio alone humours me greatly .
When I think of all the garbage music out there Thank God for Pere Ubu.
still absolutely unique and timeless
Heavy shit, it can never be too much.
Since five decades you have spoiled us with always interesting and intelligent music and haven't waned a bit. Dear Mr. Thomas, please carry on for the next five decades.
