Los Romeros - Los Romeros

Review by Steve Van Herreweghe

Los Romeros, the legendary Spanish guitar quartet, have released yet another stunning album that showcases their exceptional musicianship and deep understanding of the classical guitar repertoire. The self-titled album, Los Romeros, is a beautiful collection of works that span several centuries, from the Baroque era to the 20th century.

The album opens with a lively rendition of Vivaldi's Concerto in D Major for Guitar and Strings, which immediately sets the tone for the rest of the album. The Romeros' effortless technique and flawless ensemble playing are on full display here, as they navigate the complex counterpoint and rapid-fire chord changes with ease.

Other highlights include the hauntingly beautiful "Asturias" by Isaac Albéniz, which features the Romeros' trademark sensitivity and nuance, as well as the playful and virtuosic "Fantasia para un Gentilhombre" by Joaquín Rodrigo. The Romeros' interpretation of this piece is particularly noteworthy for its clarity and precision, as well as its emotional depth.

Throughout the album, the Romeros demonstrate their mastery of the guitar and their deep love for the music they play. Their performances are always tasteful, never showy, and always in service of the music itself. The result is an album that is both technically impressive and emotionally moving.
