This is not a song about cheating lovers or spouses as it is about good friends who are involved in one way romantic crushes. I have been on both sides of the issue when it was mutually agreed that we would never want to risk close friendships by establishing romantic relationships. In this song, it could be argued that the guy is being a bit unreasonable. (And I am a guy). The girl never intended to hurt him, she merely saw him as a close friend or a brother. Meanwhile, he wants nothing at all to do with her?

Better to hold on to close and meaningful friends than to risk all that by falling in love, have it all come crashing down, and then wind up as enemies.

For months after my first fiancee and I broke up, I couldn't listen to this song without having tears in my eyes. That was over 40 years ago and to this day I get teary eyed.
