Review by Alliana Petunia

Jelly Roll Morton's album, Baltimore 1938, is a masterpiece of jazz music that showcases the pianist's incredible talent and his ability to bring together a group of talented musicians to create a cohesive and unforgettable sound. The album captures the spirit of the era, with its lively rhythms, playful melodies, and soulful improvisations.

The opening track, "Shreveport Stomp," sets the tone for the album with its upbeat tempo, infectious melody, and intricate piano solos. Other standout tracks include "King Porter Stomp," "Sidewalk Blues," and "Milenberg Joys," each of which features Morton's signature piano style and the lively interplay between the musicians.

One of the strengths of Baltimore 1938 is the way the musicians complement each other, creating a cohesive and dynamic sound that is both exciting and emotionally resonant. Morton's piano playing is the centerpiece of the album, but the other musicians, including trumpeter Henry "Red" Allen, clarinetist Albert Nicholas, and trombonist J.C. Higginbotham, all contribute to the overall sound, adding depth and texture to the music.
