Review by Jose J. Garzón

Nocturnes La Mer by Claude Debussy, Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Jean Fournet is an exquisite album that showcases the genius of one of the most celebrated composers of all time. The album features three stunning compositions - Nocturnes, La Mer, and Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun - each of which is a masterpiece in its own right.

The Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Jean Fournet, delivers a flawless performance that captures the essence of Debussy's music. The orchestra's attention to detail and their ability to bring out the nuances in the music is truly impressive.

The album opens with Nocturnes, a three-movement piece that captures the beauty and mystery of the night. The first movement, Nuages, is a hauntingly beautiful piece that features a delicate interplay between the orchestra and the choir. The second movement, Fêtes, is a lively and energetic piece that evokes the excitement of a festive occasion. The third movement, Sirènes, is a mesmerizing piece that features the ethereal voices of the choir.

La Mer, the second composition on the album, is a breathtakingly beautiful piece that captures the majesty and power of the sea. The orchestra's performance is nothing short of spectacular, with each section of the orchestra working together to create a rich and vibrant sound.

The album concludes with Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, a piece that is considered to be one of Debussy's greatest works. The orchestra's performance is sublime, with each note and phrase perfectly executed.

About Claude Debussy, Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Jean Fournet

Born: August 22, 1862 (Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France). Died: March 25, 1918 (Paris, France). Claude Debussy was a French composer. He is sometimes seen as the first Impressionist composer, although he vigorously rejected the term. He was among the most influential composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Debussy's music frees itself of the academicism of the late nineteenth century (in particular that of the Austro / German School) to offer new perspectives and dimensions to twentieth century music. Through the use of pentatonic scales, of the whole tone scale, he returns to the ambiguity of modal systems and accomplishes a revolution of traditional harmony, different from the Wagnerian revolution. Debussy's music frees itself from the tyranny of the bar, which with its periodic accents forces the rhythm to a pre-ordered repetitions; as a consequence of these metric-harmonic innovations the classical forms are abandoned.

I want to like this, but I don’t, it sounds like the soundtrack of the little house on the prairie to me….
Zufällig gehört. Gefällt mir als Komposition überhaupt nicht, da es zu viele nervöse Stellen drin hat.
Think La Mer touched me since its second hearing. In comparison to the the Sacred of Spring, that took me longer to like. La Mer reflects quite well what the Sea is, translated into dodecaphony. Though Debussy did even better when passed into piano the rain dropping kind of music in Jardins Sous la Pluie. That's for me a perfect work as it is. As Listz and Ravel too, did greatly also, in their Jeux D'eaux à la Villa D'Este and Jeaux D'eaux, respectively, reflecting the sound of a water source. The same spell charm is found in the Ravel's Ondine of his Gaspard de la Nuit. Could say Impressionism in Music brought us tonal harmonies. Find Celibidache did a fine conducting of La Mer, with his Münkner Philarmoniker. It's the music haunting, there's nothing alike. ???❤️???
Feels a bit like Tom and Jerry sometimes

Debussy is a modern--not classical--composer. Just sayin'. And not to disparage or discredit in any way.
Proud to say that I know debussy before my teacher discuss them to us
