Chameleons, The - Script Of The Bridge

Review by Mark Ulyseas

The Chameleons' debut album, Script Of The Bridge, is a post-punk masterpiece that showcases the band's distinctive sound and songwriting talent. Released in 1983, the album features ten tracks that blend atmospheric guitar work, driving rhythms, and emotive vocals to create a haunting and powerful sonic experience.

From the opening track "Don't Fall," with its urgent guitar riffs and dynamic drumming, to the closing epic "View From A Hill," which builds to a climactic crescendo, Script Of The Bridge takes the listener on a journey through a range of emotions and moods. The album's standout tracks include "Up The Down Escalator," with its catchy chorus and infectious guitar riff, and "A Person Isn't Safe Anywhere These Days," which features a haunting melody and powerful lyrics.

One of the key strengths of Script Of The Bridge is the way the band balances its darker themes and heavier sound with moments of beauty and lightness. This is particularly evident on tracks like "Monkeyland," which features a delicate guitar intro before building to a thunderous climax, and "Second Skin," which showcases the band's ability to create a sense of intimacy and vulnerability through its lyrics and music.
