Camera Obscura - The Blizzard

Review by Mira Veranita

The Blizzard by Camera Obscura is an album that transports listeners to a dreamy world of indie pop melodies and poetic lyrics. The Scottish band's fifth studio album, released in 2009, showcases their signature sound of jangly guitars, lush strings, and Tracyanne Campbell's ethereal vocals.

The album opens with the upbeat and catchy track "French Navy," which sets the tone for the rest of the album. The songs are filled with bittersweet musings on love and longing, such as "Swans" and "Honey in the Sun." The standout track, "The Sweetest Thing," is a heart-wrenching ballad that showcases Campbell's emotive vocals and the band's skill for crafting melancholic melodies.

The production on The Blizzard is polished and sophisticated, with each instrument and vocal track blending seamlessly together. The album's standout feature is the use of strings, which add a touch of elegance and grandeur to the songs.

LYRICS

There's a blizzard comin' on
How I'm wishing I was home
For my pony's lame
And he can't hardly stand
Listen to that northern sigh
If we don't get home, we'll die

[Chorus]
But it's only seven miles to Mary Anne
It's only seven miles to Mary Anne

[Verse 2]
You can bet we're on her mind
For it's nearly Christmastime
And I'll bet there's
Hot biscuits in the pan
Lord, my hands feel like they're froze
And there's a numbness in my toes

[Chorus]
But it's only five more miles to Mary Anne
It's only five more miles to Mary Anne

[Verse 3]
That wind's howlin' and it seems
Mighty like a woman's screams
So we'd best be movin' faster if we can
Dan, just think about the barn
With the hay so soft and warm

[Chorus]
It's only three more miles to Mary Anne
It's only three more miles to Mary Anne

[Verse 4]
Dan, get up, you ornery cuss
Or you'll be the death of us
I'm so weary but I'll help you if I can
Alright, Dan, perhaps it's best
That we stop awhile and rest

[Chorus]
For it's still a hundred yards to Mary Anne
It's still a hundred yards to Mary Anne

[Verse 5]
Late that night the storm was gone
And they found him there at dawn
He had made it, but he couldn't leave ol' Dan
Yes, they found him there on the plains
His hands froze to the reins

[Chorus]
He was just a hundred yards from Mary Anne
He was just a hundred yards from Mary Anne
Merry Christmas everyone
This might be my favorite indie Christmas song. Half of the views are mine. Nothing better than wrapping presents drinking flavored coffee and listening to Christmas music☕??.
For me this cover surpasses Jim Reeves original.
I heard this on a alternative Christmas station on Google Play Music, but it's so good it can be played year round.
I want to live in the world of Camera Obscura songs.
Makes me think of Dad...
selamat hari natal 2016!
첫눈이 오늘 서울 하늘에 울리는 소리~~ 아 좋아
Gorgeous.
A sad song that reminds me of wonderful things
It's nearly impossible to leave me speechless, but once again Tracyanne has managed.
Gorgeous cover. The way she sings "in my toes" makes my pants twitch.
great song
