Review by Aaron Ellis

Convict Pool, the latest album from Calexico, is a true masterpiece that showcases the band's unique blend of Americana, indie rock, and Latin influences. The album opens with the haunting instrumental track "Gypsy's Curse," which sets the tone for the rest of the record. Throughout the album, Calexico delivers a diverse range of songs that are both musically complex and emotionally resonant.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Ballad of Cable Hogue," which features a beautiful melody and poignant lyrics. "Service and Repair" is another highlight, with its driving rhythm and infectious chorus. Other notable tracks include "Crooked Road and the Briar," "Woven Birds," and "Convict Pool," which all showcase the band's exceptional musicianship and songwriting skills.

American band from Tucson, Arizona that shares a sun-bleached border with many performers and musical styles. Comprised of two core members, and , Calexico became its own entity in 1996 with the release of the LP. Although that record marked the band's first official output, Joey and John had already been playing together as collaborating members of Arizona mainstays . A wide variety of tours, performances (including the Montreux and North Sea Jazz Festivals) and recording sessions as Calexico and with other artists (, , ), as well as their continuing relationship with Giant Sand, allowed the band the opportunity to develop as artists. Over time, Calexico has featured a revolving cast of musicians and instruments, and the bands sonic growth can be traced through its varied releases. The band took their name from Calexico, California, a city on the boundary of California and Mexico.

Summary by Aaron Ellis

Convict Pool is a stunning achievement that cements Calexico's status as one of the most innovative and talented bands in contemporary music. With its richly layered instrumentation, powerful vocals, and evocative lyrics, this album is a must-listen for anyone who appreciates great music.

Comments

The Convict Pool EP is a short little burst of creativity from the band, and it is definitely worth a listen. The covers of Love's "Alone Again Or" and The Minutemen's "Corona" are permanent live staples and a glimpse into who Calexico views as its influences. Speaking of the band playing live (which they are one of the best live acts in the world), the best song on Convict Pool, a cover of Francoiz Breut's "Si Tu Disais", is much better on the live Calexico DVD World Drifts In with French chanteuse Breut singing most of the melodies in her beautiful register. "Sirena" serves as a grand finale to this album, with it's chorus of "Into the arms of/into the heart of", making you with it was on a proper album around this time like Feast of Wire. The remaining two tracks, the title track and "Praskovia" leave less of an impression and do not meet the otherwise high quality found here. In all, some great songs here, and if you are interested in all things Calexico you will love these songs as well. If these are the kinds of songs this band casually tosses off unto an EP, half of them covers or not, this is one amazing band!
This is a real song btw https://youtu.be/n6PjSF3oF5Y
Nostalgia like El Kabong's guitar hit me in the head.

As a Mexican growing up I would literally stay up all night watching boomerang until this song played. We didn't have internet. Now I can listen to this whenever I want. The violins and the Spanish guitar really makes this ??
