Review by Knut Tarald Hartmark j

Phaedra Lachrymae The Sword In The Stone Night Mail Sinfonietta by Britten Jean Rigby, Nigel Hawthorne, Roger Chase, The Nash Ensemble, Lionel Friend is an outstanding album that showcases the exceptional talent of these musicians. The album comprises of four pieces that are beautifully crafted and performed with precision and passion.

The first piece, Phaedra, features the mesmerizing voice of Jean Rigby, who brings to life the tragic story of the Greek mythological character. Her voice is hauntingly beautiful and perfectly complements the orchestral score. The second piece, Lachrymae, is a stunning interpretation of the original work by Benjamin Britten. Roger Chase's viola playing is exceptional, and he effortlessly conveys the melancholic mood of the piece.

The Sword In The Stone is a playful and energetic piece that features the talented Nigel Hawthorne as the narrator. His voice is engaging and adds an element of fun to the composition. The final piece, Night Mail Sinfonietta, is a beautiful tribute to the British postal service. The Nash Ensemble, under the direction of Lionel Friend, delivers a flawless performance of this intricate piece.

About Britten Jean Rigby, Nigel Hawthorne , Roger Chase, The Nash Ensemble, Lionel Friend

British composer, conductor, and pianist. Born: November 22, 1913, in Lowestoft, UK - died: December 04, 1976, in Aldeburgh, UK. He showed talent from an early age, and first came to public attention with the a cappella choral work A Boy Was Born in 1934. With the premiere of his opera Peter Grimes in 1945, he leapt to international fame. For the next fifteen years he devoted much of his compositional attention to writing operas, establishing him as one of the leading 20th century figures in this genre. Britten's interests as a composer were wide-ranging; he produced important music in such varied genres as orchestral, choral, solo vocal (much of it written for the tenor Peter Pears), chamber and instrumental, as well as film music. He also took a great interest in writing music for children and amateur performers, and was a fine pianist and conductor. One of Britten's most important works, The War Requiem was completed 20 December 1961, and first performed 30 May 1962. Britten received many prizes and honors, including becoming a Companion of Honour in 1952, and a member of the Order of Merit in 1965.
